This study seeks to explore how and from which source the students of the French department of Salahaddin University-Erbil they have drawn the cultural images of France. Thus, a field study has been carried out consisting of many closed, open and semi-open questions. The study is supported by a four- year personal experience in teaching French language and culture.
The teaching of French language in general and in Kurdistan in particular started only recently. Kurdish students have long identified France as the land of philosophers and thinkers, of freedom and democracy, and source of perfumes, drinks and cheese! For them, the word ‘French’ hardly implies anything negative.
Throughout the present study, we have traced the abovementioned conception both to locate its source and to find out if it actually reflects the true image of French culture or just represent distorted stereotypes? Have these images and conceptions arrived through the internet and the media channels? Or through the curricula covered in the department of French in Salahaddin university?
Accordingly, the study is divided into two sections; the theoretical which covers the impact of the dominant dimensions of a particular culture on the transferal of cultural images. This section is mainly concerned with how the images, and stereotypes can be distorted by pointing out to their primary causes. The second section, however, deals with the practical aspect of the study by analyzing and discussing the results in diagrams and charts followed by the conclusions and recommendations.
